What software maintenance really means after launch

A tidy desk with a laptop and monitor ready for work

A common surprise for first-time software owners: the project does not end at launch. Software sits on top of frameworks, libraries, operating systems and cloud services that all keep changing, and an application that nobody looks after slowly becomes slower, less secure and harder to change.

What maintenance covers

  • Security updates. Every dependency publishes fixes for vulnerabilities. Applying them promptly is the single most effective way to keep an application safe.
  • Platform upgrades. Frameworks and runtimes reach end of life; mobile apps have to support each new iOS and Android release to stay in the stores.
  • Monitoring. Error tracking, uptime checks and performance alerts tell us about a problem before your customers do.
  • Bug fixes. Real users always find paths nobody tested.
  • Small improvements. The feedback that arrives after launch is the most valuable feedback you will get. A little time each month to act on it keeps the product improving.

Why skipping it costs more

Updates are cheap when they are small and regular. Skip them for two years and a routine upgrade becomes a project of its own, often with breaking changes across the whole codebase. We are regularly asked to take over applications in that state: it can always be fixed, but it is never the cheaper option.

How to budget for it

Plan for maintenance from the start, as a monthly retainer sized to the application. A simple internal tool needs a few hours a month; a busy customer-facing product with mobile apps needs a steady part of a team. We agree response times up front, so you know exactly what happens when something breaks on a Friday evening.
